It turned out to be a bad night for Arlovski. But out of that a friendship developed between Arlovski and Salei. Not only was Arlovski able to fulfill his promise to Salei's son, he's taken up hockey. Still, there seems to be little danger that he'll leave the cage for the rink, and until recently it seemed like his days as a pro fighter might be numbered. Arlovski, 35, has bounced from one organization to another in recent years, and it was something of a shock when UFC President Dana White announced that the organization was bringing back the former titleholder.
Not that Arlovski was surprised. He always knew he'd make it back to the UFC one day, he insists, but when he finally heard it was a done deal, even he was overcome with emotion. Arlovski dropped Sylvia quickly with nice right hand, followed his opponent to the ground and went straight for a heel hook. Arlovski only needed one punch to defend his UFC heavyweight title.
Just 15 seconds. Arlovski connected with a picture-perfect straight right to the jaw of Buentello that dropped him that ended the bout. A truly incredible performance for Arlovski that will go down as one of the best knockouts of his career. Arlovski connected with two right hands in a row that put Silva down and followed up with hammer fists that put Silva completely out. It was violent and it was vintage Arlovski. It took less than a minute for Arlovski to get going against Travis Browne, as he hurt Browne with a nice uppercut followed by a furious flurry of strikes, but Browne was able to survive the onslaught and regain his composure.
He got back in the win column in July of that year with a pedestrian win over Dan Christison, but a knockout loss to Brandon Vera four months later appeared to end any hopes of Mir getting back into championship form.
He was still marketable after leaving the promotion with three wins, and the only blemishes on his record in the previous four years were to Sylvia. So he got big fights and won them, knocking out Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson in By , he was a cautionary tale. In that same year, Mir won two fights over Nelson and Minotauro Nogueira which kept him in the heat of a title picture he had remarkably returned to.
It was a long road for Mir, but he regained his UFC title at least the interim version of it , engaged in a heated two-fight series with Brock Lesnar, and re-established himself as an elite heavyweight.
Mir returned from a self-imposed sabbatical in February with a first-round knockout of Bigfoot. And though some campaigned for an Arlovski vs. Werdum rematch for the title, when it was announced that the new champion would face Cain Velasquez a second time, the door was finally open. On September 5, , we get the fight we always wanted in the co-main event of UFC And better.
